As the Great Lakes transition into a predicted period of lower water levels, coastal communities, regulators, and asset owners are preparing for a new set of challenges. In this follow-up to our 2021 shoreline systems webinar—which focused on the effects of high water and flooding—NTH experts will examine the often-overlooked consequences of sustained low water conditions and the impact of low water levels on shorelines.

This session will explore how receding water levels affect navigation channels, shoreline stability, infrastructure performance, and ecological balance. A major focus will be on the increasing need for dredging to maintain harbor and shipping operations, and the technical and regulatory complexities that come with it. Presenters will outline the permitting landscape, including recent changes to shoreline protection and dredging regulations, and address the potential presence of legacy contaminants in sediment that may complicate or delay maintenance efforts. Join us to gain a clearer understanding of what low water levels mean for shoreline management and infrastructure planning in the Great Lakes region—and how municipalities, ports, and private stakeholders can proactively adapt to protect critical assets.
