Project Overview

NTH assists in site due diligence, air permitting, process hazard assessments, geotechnical exploration, and civil design for various RNG facilities, including civil design services for the Consumers Energy gas metering stations. As Leadership Members of the Renewable Natural Gas Coalition, NTH is well-versed in regulatory drivers of RNG project development and works closely with key stakeholders. Our team has extensive experience navigating RNG projects in civil design as well as environmental health and safety matters, as has been demonstrated on dozens of projects across the U.S. as well as here in Michigan. We’ve highlighted several projects we’ve supported the Consumers Energy team.

Project Scope
Consumers Energy TMS Metering Facilities | Saranac & Hopkins, Michigan

NTH provided civil engineering support to Consumers Energy (CE) for the CE Keene 23 and Monterey 23 metering stations located adjacent to Novilla RNG and BerQ RNG anaerobic digestion dairy RNG plants, respectively. NTH’s scope included support for civil engineering, construction, and closeout-related support to the civil design services including site plan design, equipment foundation design, mechanical building foundation design, gas analysis building foundation design, and CAD services (60%, 90%, AFC, and AFC drawing packages). NTH also responded to and resolved contractor field questions, reviewed contractor submittals, answered contractor requests for information, reviewed contractor redline drawings, and ensured the project drawings conformed to CE’s CAD standards.

NTH served the role as CE’s civil engineering representative on the CE multi-disciplinary project team. NTH worked with the project team and delivered the project on time and under budget.

Consumers Energy Swisslane RNG & SKS Development Air Permits | Alto, Michigan

NTH prepared an air permit application for a new CE RNG facility to be located at Swisslane Farms in Alto, Michigan. NTH worked closely with the CE project manager, air quality program lead, EPC contractor, and Swisslane representative to obtain relevant equipment and design information. We calculated emission estimates on an hourly and annual basis, developed a permitting strategy, lead a pre-application meeting with Michigan EGLE, reviewed regulatory and environmental justice impacts, and developed a technical support document.

NTH is supporting additional CE RNG facilities across Michigan, including Spring Creek, Wheeler, and Mibelloon RNG facilities. working closely with SKS Development on air permitting and compliance. We maintain regular contact with Michigan EGLE in obtaining timely approval of environmental permits and flexible conditions to support new projects and CE’s sustainability goals.

Client Benefit

NTH is a Leadership Member of the RNG Coalition and understands the market that CE is engaging in on these projects. We have direct experience on RNG projects dating back to 2016 in providing process hazard analysis and facility support.
