Project Overview

Tetra Tech, Inc. was retained by the City of Lansing to provide engineering services for the 2016 Lansing Major Streets Rehabilitation program. Tetra Tech selected NTH to provide geotechnical engineering services early in the project to facilitate their design and construction materials testing services during construction. The project consisted of asphalt pavement milling and resurfacing with some concrete curb and sidewalk as well as limited water main replacement along five roadways. The total project length was about 2 miles and was funded and bid through the MDOT Local Agency Program (LAP).

Project Scope

NTH’s services were divided into three Tasks; pavement coring, geotechnical engineer, and construction materials testing.

  • Pavement Coring Services: At the outset of the project, NTH performed a series of 22 pavement cores along the five roadway sections. The pavement cores were positioned along the roadway alignment to be representative of the pavement cross section along both the longitudinal and lateral extents. The pavement thickness and conditions were provided to Tetra Tech to facilitate their pavement rehabilitation design.
  • Geotechnical Engineering Services: During the design process, the replacement of about 1,700 feet of water main along one of the five roadways was added to the scope of the overall project. NTH performed a geotechnical exploration consisting of a series of four drilled soil borings to identify and classify the subsurface strata. NTH issued Tetra Tech geotechnical recommendations for support of the pipe, pavement structure, and general earthwork.
  • Materials QA Testing: NTH provided Tetra Tech with construction materials testing services during construction of the five roadways. NTH’s services included backfill inspection and density testing, asphalt pavement inspection and density testing, concrete placement inspection and field/laboratory testing, and HMA plant inspection and material testing. NTH provided Tetra Tech with QA inspection and testing results to facilitate construction administration of the project.

NTH provided QA inspection and testing with a variable schedule on an as-needed basis to meet the client’s needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner. NTH’s staff were made available with as little as two-hours notice.
