Project Overview

NTH has been a trusted advisor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for more than 25 years, helping MDOT address transportation needs and asset preservation services. Over the years, NTH has provided MDOT with many services that have rehabilitated or reconstruction the existing transportation network, facilitated compliance with new regulations and policies, and supported construction of new facilities. In support of many of these services, NTH has provided subsurface utility engineering (SUE) services to MDOT. SUE services are typically performed to identify and locate subsurface utilities, map the utility locations, and provide the designers and excavators with the information needed to perform safe and efficient work.

Project Scope

More than a privatized MISS DIG service that provides necessary clearances only at particular locations, SUE is an integrated engineering design service developed to locate and map entire utility networks, whether in public rights-of-way or beyond. It provides design professionals with the reliable utility data required for infrastructure rehabilitation and improvement projects. SUE methodology also provides a cost-effective means of updating and consolidating “as-built” utility drawings. NTH has held a contract from MDOT for as-needed SUE services since the contract’s inception in 2015. Under this contract, NTH has performed numerous SUE investigations including Utility Quality Levels D through A all across the State. Additionally, NTH serves on as-needed design teams for traffic signals and design survey providing SUE services.

Client Benefit

NTH utilized its subsurface utility engineering experience to assist MDOT and other designers to better understand the subsurface and to minimize the risk of costly and time-consuming utility conflicts during construction.
