Project Overview

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) has retained NTH to provide geotechnical engineering and construction inspection and testing services on an as-needed basis. NTH has been serving RCOC in this role since 2015. NTH has provided services for roadway rehabilitation, new pavement construction and reconstruction, installation of replacement culverts, and other transportation infrastructure.

Project Scope

NTH has worked with various individuals within RCOC from early preliminary design, to final design, to construction. NTH has provided design recommendations for deep culvert installations to simple mill and fill rehabilitation. During construction, NTH has provided full time roadway construction inspection services and as-needed material testing and inspection services on various projects.

NTH’s services have included:

Geotechnical

  • Pavement cores and shallow and deep test borings.
  • Pavement rehabilitation and design recommendations.
  • Excavation and groundwater control recommendations for deep culverts.
  • Bearing resistance analyses for structures

Construction:

  • Construction observation and inspection
  • Sampling and testing placed materials in the field and in the laboratory for conformance with project specifications.
  • Sampling and testing off-site materials for conformance with project specifications.
Example Projects Completed for As-Needed Contract
  • Seeley Drain Culvert Replacements – Geotechnical exploration and design for the replacement of existing culverts beneath Haggerty Rd. to enhance flow characteristics, modified wing walls, and streambed protection with aluminum culvert sections over compressible soils.
  • Maple Road Rehabilitation – Geotechnical exploration and design for pavement resurfacing, lane widening, and culvert replacement along Maple Rd. Turn lanes were added, the road was repaved, and a box-type culvert with wing walls and headwalls was replaced at the Minnow Creek.
  • Elizabeth Lake Road Roundabouts – Geotechnical exploration and design for conversion of two T-intersections into roundabouts at Elizabeth Lake Rd. and Oxbow Lake Road and with Teggerdine Road.
  • 14 Mile Road Rehabilitation – Geotechnical exploration for repaving of 14 Mile Road.
  • Pontiac Trail Drive – Construction observation and material testing and sampling for roadway, sidewalk, and curb and gutter reconstruction.
  • Orchard Lake Road – Construction observation and material testing and sampling for roadway, sidewalk, and curb and gutter reconstruction.
  • Rochester Road –  Construction observation and material testing and sampling for roadway, sidewalk, and curb and gutter reconstruction.
  • Walton Boulevard – Construction inspection and documentation for pavement, sidewalk, and curb and gutter reconstruction. Construction observation and material testing and sampling.
